On the cold morning of Jan. 28, 1986, shortly after liftoff at Cape Canaveral, the space shuttle Challenger exploded into a giant fireball over the Atlantic as the nation watched in horror. All seven crew members aboard were killed, including Christa McAuliffe, a 37-year-old teacher from New Hampshire, who had been chosen by NASA as the first “private citizen” to go into space. This e-single, a collection of articles from The New York Times, recounts critical events surrounding the disaster.  In its aftermath, a presidential commission concluded that the accident was caused by weakened O-rings, the gaskets that seal rocket joints. The government also laid blame on NASA and the rocket manufacturer. During the investigation, it became clear that NASA had had previous knowledge that the O-rings tended to shrink in cold weather. Indeed, just hours before the fatal launch on that January morning, engineers had cautioned of that possibility.
